The Max Planck Institute has been present in Loango NP since 2005, where they run the Loango Ape Project. Their small field site is home to a permanent presence of researchers who are focussed on the habituation of gorillas and chimpanzees for research and tourism. This project has already generated several publications on the ecology, population demography and health of the ape population and is now contributing to a wider vision of gorilla tourism, in close collaboration with ANPN and SFM Safari Gabon.
